Benefits of Infrared Saunna at the Spa

Healing Principles of Infrared

Infrared sauna is an effective method for considerably raising the rate of energy expenditure in the body. Proponents typically quote the Journal of the American Medical Association stating: "A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 grams in a sauna, consuming nearly 300 kcal, which is equivalent to running 2–3 miles. A heat-conditioned person can easily sweat off 600–800 kcal with no adverse effects. While the weight of the water loss can be regained by drinking water, the calories consumed will not be. This statement is based on the amount of energy absorbed by sweat evaporating from the skin. It is equivalent to the latent heat of vaporization of water, which is 539 kcal/kg (2260 kJ/kg). The source of this energy is then confused to be body energy stores, while the source is in fact the excessive heat absorbed from the sauna. The body reacts to the excess heat flux by increasing perspiration. This does not increase body heat generation and calorie burn.

Function

  • Far-infrared radiant heat has the ability to penetrate into the body. When the energy penetrates through the skin to the lower tissue, it transforms from light energy to heat energy. The heat energy then creates a thermal effect on the deep tissue causing blood vessels to dilate and promote better blood circulation.

Features

  • According to Encyclopedia.com, infrared rays occupy the part of the electromagnetic spectrum with a frequency less than that of visible light and greater than radio waves. This infrared radiation is the thermal or heat radiation that is in use in the infrared sauna. According to sources like Evolution Health.com, because this thermal energy penetrates the body without heating up the surrounding atmosphere of the body, the infrared sauna works more efficiently than traditional saunas that raise the temperature of the air with steam.

Benefits

  • Some of the benefits attributed to infrared saunas is the ability to detoxify the body when the heat penetrates the skin, the burning of fat calories and inducing relaxation. Some also claim that it helps to improve the immune system and control your blood pressure.
